Terms of use
Last updated 2026-08-23
These terms are the agreement between you and PTM-Systems Oy, business ID 2249339-5, Sukulantie 375, 30100 Forssa, Finland, about using the Piiloperuna app and the website at piiloperuna.app. Installing or using the app means accepting them.
They are written to be read. The section about what the app can and cannot tell you is the one to read first, and it is not there as a formality.
What Piiloperuna is, and what it is not
Piiloperuna is a reading aid. It photographs the ingredient panel printed on a package, reads it on the phone, and points out the words that appear on the list you gave it. That is the whole of what it does.
It is not a safety device, it is not a medical device, and nothing it shows you is medical advice. It cannot tell you that a food is safe. What it can tell you is what is printed on that package, as far as it managed to read it.
The app answers in four ways, and they mean different things:
- Avoid
- A word from your list was found in the ingredient list as it is printed.
- Check
- Something was found that may or may not be what you are avoiding, because the panel is not required to say. Unqualified starch is the usual case.
- Clear
- The whole list was read and none of your words was in it. This means the app read that list and did not find it. It does not mean the product is safe, and it says nothing about what the manufacturer did not print, about traces, about the production line, or about a recipe that changed since the package was designed.
- Read again
- The reading could not be trusted, usually because the whole list was not in the frame. Nothing at all can be concluded from it.
A photograph can be blurred, a panel can be creased, worn or badly lit, and the app can misread a word. The list of ingredients the app knows about is curated by hand and will never be complete, and a manufacturer can name a substance in a way nobody has anticipated. So a finding is a reason to look closer, and the absence of a finding is not a result you should act on alone.
If an allergy in your household can be dangerous, keep reading the package yourself and follow the advice of the people treating it. In an emergency, call the emergency number, which is 112 across the EU.
What using the app asks of you
Two things, and both of them matter more than the usual list of prohibitions.
- Keep the lists accurate. The app checks against what you entered, so an ingredient that is not on a profile is one the app will not look for and will not mention.
- Read the package yourself when the answer matters. The app is a first filter for the person doing the shopping, and it is at its most useful where a careful reader is slowest, which is the derivatives that do not name their source.
The app is meant for adults. If you are under 18, use it with a parent or guardian.
Your licence to use the app
You get a personal, non-exclusive licence to install and use Piiloperuna on devices you control, for your own use, for as long as these terms are kept to. The app and everything in it, including the ingredient library, the name and the artwork, remain ours.
You may not sell, rent or redistribute the app, and you may not take it apart or attempt to derive its source beyond what the law expressly allows you to do regardless of what a licence says.
The free version and the full version
Nearly all of the app is free and stays free. Any number of profiles may exist, switching between them is free, sharing is free in both directions, and scanning is never restricted or counted.
The full version is one purchase, made once, that allows more than one profile to be checked at the same time. That is everything it unlocks.
It is sold through Google Play as a single non-consumable product. The purchase itself is a transaction between you and Google, at the price Google shows you in your own currency including any tax, under Google Play’s terms. Refunds are handled by Google Play under Google’s refund policy, and if you are buying as a consumer in the EU your statutory right to withdraw within fourteen days applies as Google Play implements it.
The purchase belongs to the Google account that made it, so it comes back on a new phone with that account signed in. The app never takes the full version away once it has seen it. If the store cannot be reached, the app leaves the full version in place and asks again later.
There is no subscription, and this purchase is never turned into one. If a future feature has real running costs behind it, it will be priced separately and will not touch what this purchase bought.
Sharing a profile
You can send someone else’s list to another phone as a QR code or as a link. Before you do, make sure it is yours to send. A list of the ingredients a named person avoids is information about their health, and if it describes somebody else — a child, a relative, a guest — sharing it is a decision that is theirs or their guardian’s to make, not the app’s.
Anyone who has the link can open it, and it keeps working after it has been forwarded. Send it the way you would send anything else about someone’s health.
A shared list is a copy taken at that moment. It does not update itself when the sender changes theirs, and the sender is not told when it is opened. If you keep a list for someone, send it again after you change it, and if you hold someone else’s copy, ask them for a fresh one now and then.
Availability and changes to the app
The app runs on your phone and keeps working without a network, but we cannot promise that it is available without interruption, that it is free of faults, or that it will run on every phone and every version of an operating system. Updates may add, change or remove features, and support for older devices ends when their platform ends.
We may stop distributing or updating the app. If that happens, a copy already installed keeps working for as long as the phone lets it, and nothing installed is switched off remotely.
Liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes anything that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded. That includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, liability for fraud, and your mandatory rights as a consumer under Finnish law and under the law of the country you live in.
Subject to that, the app is provided as it is. We are not liable for a decision made about a food on the strength of a scan, for anything a package failed to print, for a misreading of a panel, or for indirect or consequential loss. Where liability can lawfully be limited, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app.
This is not an attempt to sign away responsibility for the app working as it is described here. It is the line between a tool that reads printed text and the medical judgement the tool is not making, and the app is built and worded throughout to keep that line visible.
If something goes wrong
Write to inbox@ptmsystems.fi first. Most things are quicker to fix that way than any of the alternatives.
These terms are governed by Finnish law. If you are a consumer, that does not take away the protection of any mandatory rule of the country you live in.
A consumer in Finland can take a dispute to the Consumer Disputes Board at kuluttajariita.fi, after contacting the Consumer Advisory Service at kuluttajaneuvonta.fi. Disputes that are not resolved otherwise are heard by the district court of the defendant’s domicile, or by the court of the consumer’s own place of residence.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated, and the date at the top says when they last were. A change that materially affects you will be announced in the app or on this site before it takes effect, and continuing to use the app after that means the new terms apply.
Piiloperuna’s privacy policy is a separate document and describes what the app does with your data. Nothing in these terms overrides it.
